Big Pelf struggles, Utley crushes, Willie tinkers, and the Mets lose in Philly

Before this weekend, who would have thought a sweep in Philly was even a possibility? Well, If not for Willie's tinkering, and Pelfrey struggling, it could have happened.

Mike has been great this spring, but he's still learning how to pitch in the big leagues. There are times when he can dominate, and time when he's terrible. Last night was kind of a so-so night. Mike struggled with control, and had his fastball up in the zone more often than not. When you play a team as powerful as the Phillies, that can be trouble. Utley picked up the slack of Rollins' absence and single handily beat the Mets last night. On a windy night in that bandbox of a park, he planted 2 homeruns for a total of 4 RBI into the seats. And then Feliz finished the job with a pinch hit home run off Feliciano. That's 2 games in a row that Pedro has struggled. Is He hanging out with Heilman for dinner? Joe Smith shut the Phillies down, but the damage was already done.

As for Willie's tinkering, he put Castillo back in the 2 hole. After 5 straight games of the Mets scoring in the 1st inning when Church was in the 2 hole, Willie puts his buddy Castillo back there last night. Then the Mets fail to score in the 1st inning, and Castillo can't even bunt when needed in the 9th inning. Way to screw the pouch Willie. Even with Castillo's almost automatic out, the Mets had a chance to tie the game or take the lead in the 9th inning. Only a great stop by Bruntlett on Beltran's smash up the middle stopped the Mets Rally and ended the game.

David Wright is getting downright scary at the plate. He got hits in his 1st six at bats this weekend, and got 2 more hits last night. He's absolutely crushing baseballs and wearing out the opposing pitchers. Last year he could barely smell an RBI in April, and this year he already has 19 and counting. He's not human. Someone check to see if the is a big S on his tee shirt. He's hitting .359 and has 10 doubles. 15 of his 23 hits this month are extra base hits. Too bad the Carlos brothers are missing all the fun on the base paths. If they ever decide to join the party, the Mets could realy start putting the division in the rearveiw mirror.

I'm looking forward to seeing what Maine and the rest of the team can do against the Cubs. They have a good team and will prove to be tough to beat. Some even have the Cubs going to the Series. So it's time for the Mets to put that thought to rest and sweep the Cubs to the curb tonight and tomorrow.
