The Mets survive a test

This was a good win all around. Maine pitched great. Delgado hit the ball hard. The fielding was super. And the Mets kept the pressure on the Braves pitchers.

Just a few thoughts before hitting the sack.

1- Guinness, give Gotay a break. He's young and hasn't had alot of playing time lately. I doubt Witless Willie and Omar did much for his confidence when they traded for Castillo. Young players need to see that thier coaches have faith in them. The Mets didn't exactly show Rubin any love by making that trade.

2- Pelfrey needs to step up tomorrow. Hopefully with Pedro back in the dugout, he can give some tips to Mike and help keep him loose. Pelfrey has great stuff, he showed that this spring. Sometimes I think he get a little bit of stage fright. Pedro's antics and personality should help keep him laughing.

3- The hitters need to keep after the Braves. Don't take anything for granted, go for the throat once the Braves slip.

4- Keep Lo Duca behind the plate for Pelfrey. Pauly brings that Captain Red A-s attitude to the field and will steady Mike when things get sticky.

One down, 5 more to go before the Mets return home.

Gary Cooper Shoots down all the bad guys again!!!!

John Maine, the Young Gunslinger, has once again rose to the challenge. Just like Gary Cooper in "High Noon", He stood tall and did a job no one else could do. He's slayed the evil Braves thru 7 innings and gives his team a chance. I've like John since I 1st saw him pitch. He saws no fear and always gives you everything he has. Sometimes are better than others, but there is no quit in him.

And Guinness, thanks for the comments. Sometimes even I can end up being right. I just think the young pitchers on the team are more comfortable with Pauly behind the plate. Hopefully Omar can see fit to resign Lo Duca.

Gary Cooper is doing his Best

So far John is doing the walk down Maine Street and the Calvary is behind him. It was good to see Delgado hit on over the fence. His bat is going to be sorely needed this weekend. What I don't understand is why are three of the Mets Hitters [Reyes, Castillo, Chavez] insisting on bunting every time up? Swing the bats and hit the ball. They're doing nothing but giving the Braves outs. Well no sooner did I type that question, then Reyes drills a ball into the stands. WAY TO GO JOSE' !!!!!!!!!!!! Now, the Mets need to shut down the Braves again, and keep after Hudson. DON'T LET UP!! KEEP THEIR FOOT ON HIS NECK!!

The Mets facing their Waterloo

I have serious doubts about this weekends outcome. Unless someone besides David Wright starts making an effort in the field and at the plate, this will be a long troubling week to come. These are some things I believe need to be done this weekend.

1- John Maine needs to bring his "A" game tonight. He is our best hope of winning a game this weekend. The young Gunslinger needs to be the Gary Cooper of this "High Noon" show down. No one else is willing to stand alone against the evil that the Mets face this weekend. It's up to him to keep the Braves under control, and hope the Calvary [the bats] decide to ride to the rescue.

2- Don't give the Jones duo ANYTHING to hit!!!! They have killed the Mets nearly as often as Pat Burrell has. And we all know how that worked out this week.

3- Pelfrey and Humber need to carry their weight this weekend. They can't allow the Braves to get easy runs and bury the Mets early in the game.

4- Mota, Heilman, Feliciano, Wagner, Sosa, and Scott Schwienwiess need to be used correctly. That means only as needed and not an out more. That might mean only one inning, or one out. Willie has done his best to burn up this pen this year and now it's all messed up.

5- Be carefull pitching to Franquer. He's quikly turning into a Met killer too. He's no easy out anymore.

6- When or if the Mets get a Braves' pitcher reeling, they need to BURY HIM!!!! Don't let up. Don't be swinging for the fences when a base hit will do. Too often the Mets [Reyes, Delgadud, Alou', ect.] swing at the first pitch and pop up or fly out. Too many rallys are being killed by hitting weak fly balls.

7- Play Attention!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm tired of see Mets players do stupid things on the bases [Reyes, Milledge, Delgadud ] and in the field. There is no room for error this weekend. The Mets will need every base runner they can get.

Well, I hope the Mets follow these rules. If so they may actually win 2 out of 3 games. [I don't hold out much hope for Glavine winning]. I'm crossing my fingers and swallowing the tums as I leave you.

I think I'll start drinking again

Not much went right in Phillie this week. About the only thing accomplished was giving hope to 2 teams that should have been buried by now.

All year I've been hearing about how the Mets are the best team. About how if they were healthy, they'd dominate the League. About how they have an American league style lineup. These things may be true. But a team is no better than the guy making the decisions. And time after time Willie have proven that he can not make the hard choices, or the correct choices when the game is on the line. I'm really starting to wonder if Willie has the capacity to manage on this level. He has shown no improvement in his game time decisions or motivational skills. This team is so flat and lifeless it's scary. They show no sence of urgency or worry. Willie has all to tools needed to win multiple Rings. He just seems to lack the knowledge or skill needed to effectively use all the pieces of this Mets puzzle.

I enjoy History very much. When i was growing up I loved reading about the Revolution and the Civil War. What we have in NY is not alot different than what Lincoln had for the 1st 2 years of the war. Lincoln had the most powerful army on the face of the Plant, but had a General who lacked the ability to use it effectively. The Army of the Potomic was that Army. They had 3 times the Men and equipment as any other army the South could put into battle. But Lincoln had George McClellen as a General. The South had Robert E. Lee. Lee continued to beat the Army of the Potomic for years because the Army's strengths were never used correctly. McClellen and others were always delaying the battle, and asking for more time and supplies. He used the Army in haphazardly ways and failed to push his advantage when given the opportunity. Finally after suffering defeat after defeat, Lincoln replaced McClellen. George Meade commanded the Army at Gettysburg and won the most important battle of the War. And Grant soon after took command and used the Army's advantages to beat Lee and his Army into surrendering. It was a long bloody road, but Grant used the Army to it's potential and won the war. What we have in NY is another McClellen [Willie Randolph], when we need another U.S. Grant. And until our Lincoln [Omar] realizes that, we as fans will be disappointed.

And that's the history lesson for today folks.

Willie needs to go.

I can't stand it anymore. Wagner misses games this week for a "dead arm", and Witless Willie brings him in for 6 outs? Is he crazy?

And what kind of defense were the Mets playing today? Why was Marlon Anderson standing within 20 feet of the left field fence in the 9th inning? So the little broken bat pop fly by Werth can become a hit instead of an out? Why was Beltran playing so deep when Victorino came to bat earlier in the game? Was that so he could get a little dunker hit and score a run too? There were alot of things that were done in this game that make no sense at all. Willie once again has proven today that he has no idea on how to set the fielders. I'm so mad I could chew nails and spit staples.

Where's the rope?

Why do the Mets do it.

It, is pitch to Burrell. He has killed the Mets for longer than I care to remember. But the Mets insist on pitching to him. I wouldn't throw anything even near the plate to him. He's hit 2 home runs today and now 41 for his career against the Mets. This goes along with 102 RBI. Why would he even see a pitch to hit? Sometimes I just have to shake my head.

Wright is the Man

I'm happy to see the Mets are showing some spine and are fighting back in this game. David Wright is THE MAN. He single handily is carrying and dragging the Mets though this game. He has 3 hits, stolen a base, walked, and made at least a few steller plays in the field.

As I write this the Mets are ahead by 1 run, and the bases are now loaded again. Hopefully Delgadud can get a hit and put an end to this nightmare in Phillie. He needs to get a hit, and end his miserable hitting streak. He's just grounded out and another run has scored. Now if Green can get another hit the Mets should be safe for awhile. Unless Willie brings in Mota.

Buckner strikes again

The same ump that couldn't call balls and strikes correctly earlier in this series, just called out Shawn Green due to Marlon Anderson's boneheaded play. Sliding hard into 2nd to break up the double play is good. Trying to lay a shoulder block to the 2nd baseman 5 feet away from the bag is not good. That intensity is needed more often, but it has to be done within the rules.

I'm sick of this whole series. The Mets just wasted away their week and probably the season. Instead of burying the Phillies, they now have to worry about getting thru the week in first place. Games like this will only inspire the Phillies and Braves. With Cincy playing better now too, the Mets are in BIG TIME TROUBLE. It's weeks and seasons like this that make it so hard to be a Mets fan.

Because of the day game tomorrow, I'll have to wait until after the game to comment and the historic collapse of the Mets.

My kingdom for a run

My god. What is the Mets problem!!!! Perez is the only player that seems to be alive on the field. Somehow he's managed to stay in the game while striking out 10 and walking 5. That's not very good on the walks, and the walk to Moyer is the difference in the game as of now.

Well once again Willie has removed the starting pitcher only to turn the game over to the Mets impotant calf-pen. There's no Bull in that pen. Just a bunch of Veal chops on legs. So much for the Mets showing some spine and playing with a sense of urgency. I guess there is always next year. With the way they're playing this year, what free-agent of any talent, will want to come to a team of castrated, over the hill, underachieving players.

Is there a Doctor in the house?

Can someone get the Mets a Doctor?

Not looking good

Let's see. So far Delgadud has popped up with 2 on and kills a rally. Perez has walked 3 and given up 2 homeruns. Reyes gets picked off 1st. Lo Duca gets doubled off 1st because he doesn't dive back. And once again, the Mets are making a lousy pitcher look like a Cy Young winner. Does this sound like the play of a team headed for a successful post season? Not to me. Hopefully they wake up and score some runs. And the worst part of all, I haven't had dinner yet. Now I have to try to eat while yelling at the TV.

Dark and Troubled times ahead

I have a bad feeling about the rest of this week. If The Mets lose tonight, they're done. This team has never shown at any time this year that they have a spine. I've been screaming to the heavens all summer that they lack a Killer Attitude.

They've been playing like they are owed a playoff spot. Keith Hernandez has said more than once that they play "Country Club" Baseball. I keep waiting and waiting for them to show some life. To show some bad boy attitude. They continue to allow lousy teams to beat them, and lousy pitchers to dominate them. They need to start making teams and other players pay for their mistakes. I want to see cleats buried in forearms and shins. I want 2nd basemen and catchers leveled if they get in the way. I want Perez to bury a fastball in the ear hole of the last batter he faces tonight. I'm tired of watching a bunch of sissys wearing Mets uniforms. The Phillies hit Beltran with a pitch in the ribs. Someone on the Phillies needs to bleed. Keith, Gary, Doc, Dykstra, Backman, Seaver, Ryan, Cone, HoJo, and Grote would never allow this kind of baseball to be played. They made people pay for even thinking they belonged on the same field with them.

On a different note, I'm looking forward to seeing Perez pitch tonight. I want 8 innings [because I don't trust Willie's ability to manage the pen], 10+ strikeouts, less than 2 walks, and less than 3 runs from Perez. He's a big game pitcher, and the Mets need his attitude and strong left arm tonight. Hopefully the bats will decide to show up too.

I got to go now. I'm getting all worked up, and I haven't had dinner yet. I need to eat before I watch the game and lose my appetite.

Pitching jitters

Guinness,
The problem with Mota is Witless Willie. As long as he is in NY, Willie will pitch him in the wrong spots and the wrong times. He'll never get his head fixed with Willie involved. Just look who taught willie all he knows. Torre isn't exactly known for making good choices with the bull pen.

And Farnsworth? Are you nuts? He's so messed up, I doubt he'll help anyone this year. Remenber Danny Graves? How did that work out? NOT GOOD.

I saw it coming

This game was decided the minute Witless Willie brought the worthless Mota into the game.

I don't care what you say Guinness, Mota should be rooming with Brian Low-Rents in New Orleans. He has no business pitching in the big leagues. He's a deflated former Steriod using piece of garbage. And Willie will do his song and dance about putting Mota out there to work things out. Someone please give Witless Willie and Mota, the human YUGO, a cab ride around Phillie tonight.

I said earlier tonight that Glavine had better put some innings under his belt. If I was a starting pitcher on the Mets, I wouldn't leave the mound unless my arm fell off.

Someone needs a kick

I'm about ready to reach thru my TV and strangle the "super tandum" of Reyes and Castillo.

What the heck are they doing!!!!!! Castillo gives a throw by Lo Duca the Ole' treatment, and Reyes once again is sleeping in the field. For someone who is supposed to be such a great fielder, Castillo forgets the basics. GET IN FRONT OF THE BALL !!!!!!!!!!! Lo Duca gets thr error, but the throw going into center is Castillo's fault.

And Reyes, I'd bench him for the rest of the game. He's taking his lousy batting out to the field. On a critical play on Werth's grounder, he DOESN'T CHARGE THE BALL!!! What is his problem??? It's only because of shear luck that the Phillies didn't score more runs. Castillo's lack of effort in blocking Lo Duca's throw cost Glavine a well earned win. Now Witless Willie brings in Mota-the Goat-a to pitch in the bottom of the 9th. Why am I having a churning feeling in my stomach? Oh that's right, Mota is about as reliable as YUGO. I have to go now and get something for my headache and churning stomach.

So far so good

So far Tommy Glavine has been doing ok. He's mixing up his pitches, and so far has been throwing enough strikes.

Wright and Castillo have turned the double plays needed, and Delgadud has hit the ball!!! Thank you Carlos. He crushed an upper deck shot to give the Mets the early lead. Glavine needs to keep the ball down, and get some innings under his belt. The pen has been too suspect to rely on them, and the Mets need this game. I'll keep my fingers crossed and hope that the Mets get the game in Billy's hands. I like it when he sticks it to the Phillies.
As the game against the Phillies draws near, here are a few thoughts about the state of the Mets.

Guinness, I don't agree with your Glavine observations in some respects. I do believe that it will be hard for Glavine to win tonight. But, it's because of his inability to throw strikes that'll sink him. He tends to be a ground ball pitcher, but some of the Phillies deal with the low pitches well. If he doesn't mix things up by, throwing somethings besides that change-up, it could be a long night. His last start was good, and he threw alot of curves and sliders along with the change-up and fastball. Now there's a joke. Tommy's fast ball is about 2mph faster than the one Brian Low-rents threw last night. And we all saw how that went. The secret to Tommy's success will be his willingness to mix up the pitches and keep the Phillies guessing. If he falls back into his old habits, it could be a short night for him.

I see that Brian Low-Rents is on his way back to New Orleans. This move allowed the Mets to activate Endy Chavez. He'll play right field and bat 8th. It's good to see him back. The talk now is on who will pitch Saturday in Atlanta. My guess is that Humber and Pelfrey will both get called up, and that Pelfrey will get the start. He's on a low pitch count tonight, so he'll be able to pitch Saturday on short rest. That should help his sinker. That's been his problem most of the time this season. His pitches have been too high. Humber will be ready to come in and take over should Mike falter early against the Braves.

Lastly, here's to hoping the Mets can get to Eaton. History says otherwise. Eaton is 5-0 with and ERA under 2.00 against the Mets. Not good for the Mets. I don't know what Eaton throws for pitches, but if he has a curve, I bet he'll be throwing that alot. Especially since the Mets have a desturbing habit of not hitting curve balls!!! Eaton's streak against the Mets has to end sometime, let's all pray it happens tonight. Keep your fingers crossed, and maybe some Magic will happen tonight.

Metropolitian's Thrown a Curve

Well, I see the Mets decided to bring their "C" game last night. "C" as in curve ball. It's so fustrating when the Mets play like this. They have a chance to bury a team and strip them of all hope, and the Mets get blown out. Thereby setting the tone for the whole road trip.

First off, sending Lawrence packing shouldn't even be up for discussion. He clearly is over matched. If he pitches in Atlanta, Witless Willie should be drawn and quartered. There is no way Omar and Willie can say that Pelfrey or Humber would do any worse than Brian Low-Rents. The Mets want to bring Endy up, and Low-Rents gives them a chance to do that.

Secondly, what the heck is wrong with the Mets hitters? Haven't they ever seen a curve ball before? Last night's game was a perfect example of being too patient at the plate. When the Phillies decided to throw a fastball, the Mets needed to jump all over it. Trying to work the count, against pitchers that are throwing curve balls for strikes, is a losing game plan. But, what else would we expect from the Witless Wonder Willie?

I hope this is the one loss of the series. But with Tom Glavine pitching tonight, it doesn't bode well. I wonder if he has learned to throw the ball over the plate yet? Then again, with the strike zone last night, does the plate location matter? I thought David Wright was going to get tossed after his last strikeout. He rarely shows his displeasure with calls, but he clearly was p.o'd the last time. I'm hoping Glavine somehow pulls a rabbit out of his cap tonight.

I've seen a disturbing flaw in the Mets offense since last year. It's cost them too many games to count. If the Mets play a team with a pitcher with good breaking pitches, they're lost at the plate. Beltran standing at the plate against Wainwright, David Wells looking like the pitcher who threw a perfect game, last night's Phillie pitcher looking like the stud of the staff. It's disturbing and something that needs to be addressed. There's no excuse for it. Is Doc Gooden available to throw batting pactice? He had a great curve ball. Maybe he can become another special assistant?

Here's hoping for Glavine to see the light, and pitch like he was 25 again.

this and that as the game goes on

Guinness, I hope your right about Mota. I just don't trust him. He's had good outings before, but then has reverted back to trash again.

The Mets are doing their best to make a nobody pitcher look like a Cy Young canidate again. It's so sickening to see this happen over and over during the season. Brian Lawrence is not doing himself any favors tonight. He throws a slow pitch inside to Burrell, and it promptly gets parked 10 rows back in the seats. I hope Lawrence still has his apartment in New Orleans, he's going to need it.

The Mets go a break on a call at 1st against Rollins, but David Wright gets wrung up on a high pitch that was clearly a ball. Go figure.

Guinness, haven't you ever seen Rey Ordonez' play back in the 90's? He was absolutely breathtaking. Just like Barry Sanders when he played for the Lions, Rey made it worth watching the Mets. No matter how bad the Mets played, he made the game worth watching.

I think it's time to bring Pelfrey and Humber back once the roster expands. Pelfrey can pitch out of the pen, and Humber can get his feet wet as a set-up man or long relief. From what I hear, Humber has been all but unhittable in New Orleans.

Hopefully the Mets decide to get a run or two before the game ends. I get so disgusted when they can't bury AAA pitchers in the early innings.

Random Thoughts on the Phillies and NL shortstops

Well here we go. This week is setting up as the week the Mets can bury the compitition, or give them hope. They need to step on the Phillies and Braves necks, and then break them. The Mets need to start playing with an attitude and to strip any hope from the Braves and Phillies.

Tonight makes the return of "Captain Red A-s" as Lo Duca is know in the clubhouse. I see Witless Willie did the right thing by sending down Sandy Alomar Jr. As good as Alomar is behind the plate, Mike DiFelice is just as good and is swinging a better bat. I hope Lo Duca gets a couple of hits and sparks the Mets to a good win tonight. Brain Lawrence could be pitching his last game as a Met. He hasn't done badly, but Pedro is due back soon, and Chavez is ready to join the club. They'll send Lawrence down and clear a spot for Endy.

As far as shortstops go, Reyes and Rollins are the class of MLB. Sorry Yankee fans, Jeter is over the hill defensively and commits too many errors. My biggest beef with Reyes are his throws. For someone with such a strong arm, why is Delgadud always digging Reyes' throws out of the dirt? I believe most of Reyes' errors are due to low throws. Rollins, hits like a 3rd basemen and also throws hard. If not for his mouth, and his habit of getting critical hits against the Mets, I'd like him too.

But, if you want to talk about the best fielding shortstop, he doesn't even play anymore. I'm talking about Rey Ordonez'. He was hands down the best shortstop I ever saw. [Sorry, I didn't see the wizard of Oz.] He made plays that I've never seen made before. He was a human highlight reel at shortstop. Fox and ESPN used to have as a daily feature " The Rey play of the Day". He once owned the MLB record for errorless games. I don't think he ever made more than 2-3 errors all SEASON!! Too bad he broke his arm. He was never the same after that. He became timid around the base and was soon out of NY. Too bad, he truely was fun to watch.

Hopefully the hitting can continue tonight, and Mota gets lost in traffic. If he doesn't straighten up soon, he'll be sent for a cab ride around the city. Delgadud needs to start earning his pay, and Lawrence needs to keep the ball on the ground. A pop fly usually ends up as a homerun. That is't a good thing. I see the Mets taking 3 of the 4, and they'll all be shootouts. No 2-1 games here.

Spanked by the Gimp

Well Guinness, have you calmed down yet? I swear the Mets should never play another Sunday night game on ESPN. Everytime they play, they lose. Maine was ok, but onceagain the victim of sloppy fielding. I was impressed with his velocity, and his stamina. I don't know if anyone realizes it, but Maine has Asthma. So for himto throw 110+ pitches and still be throwing in the mid 90's is a good sign ofhis strength. Too bad he can't get a few more misses.

Wright is now the club leader in RBI and continues to get on base. It would be niceto see Beltran be able to have a prolonged hot streak. But somehow that never seemsto happen.

Conine is not the answer at 1st, but Delgadud needs to sit sometime. Unfortunately Conine's play helped lead to a lose. That is why the Mets need to get a young slugging 1st baseman, or start converting Gotay to that job. If they resign Castillo,Gotay needs somewhere to play. He also needs to work on hitting from the right side. That isn't is natual side. DiFelice has been great. Hitting and catching. I've been saying that he shouldstay when Pauly comes back to the club. Alomar is not as good at the plate, although his defense is as good as Mike's. I doubt Castro makes any of the throws that Mike or Sandy made this weekend. Castro can hit, sometimes, but his defense is solelylacking this year.

I'm hoping for the Mets to take 3 out of 4 against Philly, and then somehow figure out a way to beat the Braves. Regardless of Witless Willie's comments, the Mets do have to beat the Braves.

El Duke comes through again

Well, time to go watch the old fossil El' Duque throw some more "Bugs Bunny" curves to some young pups. Lets hope this weather reminds him of Cuba and his younger years. 7+ innings and 7-10 strikeouts and only 2 runs. That's what I'm hoping for.

Well Delgadud left the 1st 5 base runners stranded before finally get a hit and scoring. David Wright continues to hit and El' Duque has been great this game. As I write this he has just given up a homerun to Gonzo. I'm not surprised. Gonzo hit the ball hard but foul the last time up. Now he's just given up a home run to Martin. There's the 2 runs I predicted. Now he has to stop the bleeding and get out of the 7th inning. I'm glad to hear Mota isn't warming up in the pen. Maybe Witless Willie has learned a lesson. Either that or Omar gave him orders to NOT PITCH MOTA in close games.

Well, I figured El' Duque pretty good. 7 innings, 2 runs, 7 strikeouts. Not bad at all for the old Fossil. Wright once again was on base all night, and Gotay is holding his own at 2nd. I hope Wagner was just a little tired and not hurt. I troubles me anytime the Witless one uses him in a non save situation. He's 36, and needs to keep his arm fresh for the stretch drive to October. Unless it's a save, he should sit.

Well, time to go watch the Bristol race. I'm glad the Mets won, and with a little luck can stretch their lead some more
